The WSCC’s Governance Council has the authority and mandate to establish policies for the implementation of the Workers’ Compensation Act(s), the Safety Act(s), the Mine Health and Safety Act(s) and the Explosives Use Act(s).
When does the WSCC review policies?
The Governance Council approves an annual Comprehensive Policy Review Plan that sets out the WSCC’s policy review schedule. The objectives of the Comprehensive Policy Review Plan are to:
-
review individual policies every three (3) years;
-
ensure compliance with legislation and general regulations; and
-
ensure that all WSCC policies, operational procedures and Governance Council directives are current and effective.
How does the WSCC create or change a policy?
When changing or creating policy, the WSCC follows a series of steps in the policy development process. These steps include:
|
Issue Identification: |
Stakeholders, WSCC employees, or the Office of the Auditor General identify an issue. Judicial or legislative reviews, appeal decisions, and other findings which may impact workers’ compensation and the work force may also identify issues. |
|
Issue Focus: |
We present our priorities for policy development to the Governance Council in the Comprehensive Policy Review Plan. |
|
Research and Analysis: |
We consult with our employees and stakeholders, complete historical data reviews and interjurisdictional comparisons with other Workers’ Compensation Boards. |
|
Approval: |
Our President submits a final draft policy to the Governance Council for its review and approval. |
|
Communication, internal and external: |
We distribute the new or revised policies the Governance Council approves to all employees and post them on our website.
We also notify our stakeholders through our electronic newsletter, Insight, and other communications. |
