Every year, nearly 900 Canadians lose their lives as a result of workplace injury or disease. Northerners feel these tragic losses as well. The Day of Mourning is set aside to recognize workers who lost their lives in the workplace.
The Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission has a legislated responsibility for workplace safety. More than that, it has a mission to not only care for injured workers but to promote workplace safety, with an end goal of preventing needless loss of life.
The impacts of workplace-related deaths spread beyond the workplace. Lives lost this year and in other years were our family members and friends.
We continue to support the efforts of employers and workers who continue to make workplaces safer through education, legislation, and enforcement.
The WSCC commends those workers and employers who strive to make northern workplaces safer. We ask you to honour the workers we have lost by working safely, not just on the Day of Mourning, but every day.
We all have a responsibility to make our workplaces safer. Working together, we can stop the unnecessary suffering deaths and injuries bring to our families, friends, and communities.
